Happy New Year Midpoint Meander! This marks our third year together, of course not without some significant lapses in relatedness due entirely to evolution. Never complete abandonment.
2010 seems to be the year of the Venn Diagram. They are appearing with enough regularity to catch my attention, cause some pause, and to flush this out via the trusty blog. If you've read this blog for any period of time, you know I greatly fancy repetition, coincidence, serendipity, and other little nudges the universe throws our way if we're open.
Venn Diagrams are so refreshing - cheeky yet blunt communication, never wasting time or mincing words. And the wonderful little overlaps of subsets create a type of space or place that is imaginable and even occupiable. Bud Caddell's diagram above is the ultimate set of subsets, and apropos for 2010. Hooray! is the goal and the journey to Hooray! is the continuation of this Venn Diagram reminiscent of 2009 I stumbled upon yesterday in Seth Godin's new book Linchpin: Are you Indispensible? Keeping oneself out of the 'surrender' diagram is bold and courageous and to a large degree means going against societal norms, which is never easy. It's way more simple and often rewarded to conform, obey, and comply.
Also yesterday, my longtime friend Myles gave me Twyla Tharp's new book on collaboration (my favorite obsession these days). On the cover is a beautiful Venn Diagram that doesn't even require callouts.
The sequence of these three diagrams is wonderful - individual, individual in community, and finally individual in community of communities. Life can and should be exhilarating and something as simple as a Venn Diagram can be a straightforward suggestion of such.
